Mayor de Blasio wants to block the Mets sale? Joe Benigno says 'no way, bro!'

Joe Benigno is a spry 67 years old, but there’s only so much “OH, THE PAIN!” Joe can take when it comes to his teams, bro…so you can imagine how he must have felt reading the papers this morning and seeing that Bill de Blasio may have legal right to block the Mets sale.

You don’t have to imagine any more, because Joe opened Tuesday’s show lamenting the situation.

“What do I see on the back page in the Post? ‘Wilpon says goodbye to staff as de Blasio hints he could block sale to Cohen.’ Why the hell does this guy, who has nothing to do with sports, have any say in who is going to own our baseball team?” Joe asked. “I was livid seeing that today.”

Evan then asked Joe “do you trust me,” and responded that “this mayor IS NOT going to block the sale. No way, no how.”

Roberts reiterated that the city does have legal right to look at the sale, as reported Monday, but there should be no way, and no reason to do so.

“I get why that gives you indigestion, because like many in this city, we may not trust the Mayor,” Evan said, “but violations in the past will be no reason to throw this sale into turmoil. Jeff Wilpon knows what’s going on, and when he had that meeting yesterday, he knows it’s OVERRRRRRR! And it’s gonna be over real soon – and part of me wants the World Series to end tonight so we can approve the sale!”

“I don’t trust this guy, and it aggravates me – I know it’s on city property, but this guy shouldn’t have any say in anything along those lines,” Joe said.

Ulterior motive?

“He had made a comment in the past that he was supportive of A-Rod and J-Lo buying the Mets, and SNY wrote that A-Rod and J-Lo might not have the votes from the other owners,” Evan said. “I fully endorse J-Lo buying the New York Jets, but I have a quarrel with A-Rod, and that’s who the owners may have issue with. So, hypothetically, let’s say this Mayor blows things up, it’s not as if it’s just a simple, ‘okay, A-Rod and J-Lo get the team,’ and you can understand why.”

Joe ain’t having it, from any angle.

“Maybe it’s just the Post trying to get Mets fans aggravated, but it’s working!” Joe replied. “Tell me a Mets fan who sees this and is not aggravated – like, Wilpon and de Blasio in the same sentence is a scary thing! It’s all about de Blasio, because he’s a horrific Mayor, his approval rating might not even hit zero, and this guy is obsessed with his power. The city is a disaster, and now he wants to have say in who is going to own the Mets? Oh my God!”
