The Mets were expected to ramp up Dellin Betances’ rehab assignment this week, increasing his workload to include appearances in consecutive nights, but he will have season-ending surgery instead.
Manager Luis Rojas told reporters on Wednesday that the righty reliever is done for the year and will undergo shoulder surgery. He has been out since April 7 with a right shoulder impingement.
In Betances’ lone inning of work this year, he allowed one run after a concerning spring training that saw drastically diminished velocity. In 3.2 innings during his rehab assignment, he allowed eight runs on seven hits.
Betances signed a two-year, $14 million deal with the Mets prior to the 2020 season, with a player option for 2022. He pitched just 71 innings in his Mets career, he pitched to a 7.82 ERA.
