Did Steve Cohen hint at blowing up Mets roster with deleted social media post?
UPDATE: Cohen told Andy Martino of SNY that the deleted post was meant to be sent as a direct message to the fan that posted the link, and said he was in no way suggesting that the Mets will be sellers at the deadline.
"It's way too early to speculate on anything," Cohen told Martino. "It's May 16. I expect to make the playoffs. I know the fanbase is frustrated, but it's still early. We're still very capable of making the playoffs."
As the Mets were getting trounced by the Phillies on Wednesday night, Steve Cohen potentially provided a brief glimpse into the organization's plans, before quickly deleting what was a controversial post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
In response to a video posted by a Mets fan account discussing the possibility of New York "blowing it up," Cohen replied, "All in the future, not much we can do until the trade deadline." Cohen left the post up for nearly 15 minutes before deleting it, of course not before countless fans screenshotted the post and shared it via their own social media accounts.
Cohen's deleted reply quickly sparked discussion about whether the Mets, now four games under .500 but still just one game back of a Wild Card spot, were already planning on being sellers at the trade deadline for the second straight season. Last year, coming into the season with a record payroll and high expectations, New York shockingly floundered before dealing away the likes of Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and David Robertson to replenish the farm system and look to the future.
Now, with potential free agents like Pete Alonso on the roster, Cohen could be hinting at an even bigger fire sale come the end of July.
