Dominic Smith ahead of schedule with sore wrist, took swings on Friday

The Mets received some brutal injury news with Carlos Carrasco's hamstring strain, which could leave him out for the next 6-8 weeks, but they got some much-needed good news in the form of Dominic Smith.

Smith, who has been dealing with wrist soreness, took swings on Friday, ahead of his expected recovery schedule as Opening Day approaches.

"The good news is he's actually swinging today versus tomorrow, which is the day we thought he was going to start swinging," manager Luis Rojas told reporters on Friday.

Rojas said that Smith has been feeling good physically, and his time off was more of a precaution rather than a cause for concern.

"He responded well to the treatment," Rojas said. "He told us 'If we were in the season, I'd be playing,' which is the smart thing to do at this point and not force it."

Rojas said the Mets plan on having live batting practice on Saturday, and if Smith responds well to the swings he took on Friday, he could take part in that, moving him closer towards being ready for Opening Day.

"We'll see if he's going to participate in that and see live pitching," Rojas said. "But he got the green light to start swinging."
