Edwin Diaz is still a possibility to pitch again this season, as Buck Showalter told reporters on Wednesday that the star closer has begun "pitching-relative actions" in his rehab from knee surgery.
"He might make it, or might not. But we're not going to push it," Showalter said. "I don't think we're there yet. He's not close to being a decision we need to make. But at some point, I'm hoping there's that discussion that gets more serious."
Showalter wouldn't disclose exactly what those "actions" are for Diaz, whether it is throwing off of flat ground or from a mound, but Diaz's goal of returning in 2023 may not be off the table, even after suffering a significant knee injury in the World Baseball Classic, and even after the Mets threw in the towel at the trade deadline.
"[Wednesday] was a good step for him," Showalter said. "Let's put it that way. It just wasn't done on the field."
