Edwin Diaz underwent surgery on Thursday after tearing the patellar tendon in his right knee while celebrating a victory at the World Baseball Classic, and he left a message for Mets fans after he came out of the procedure.
"To all my beloved fans, especially the Mets fans, I want to let you know that I am doing well and healing," Diaz tweeted, along with a photo of himself pitching in a Mets uniform. "I feel blessed and grateful for your support with messages and prayers, thank you very much! I can't wait to see you guys in NY again and play those trumpets."
The trumpets likely won't be heard again at Citi Field until 2024, as the average recovery time for Diaz's injury is eight months, taking the calendar into mid-November, when the World Series is over.
Mets general manager Billy Eppler did mention that some athletes have made it back in six months, but for a pitcher who relies on their lower body to generate power and drive off the mound, the Mets will likely play it safe with Diaz, who recently signed a $100 million contract, and keep him on the shelf until Opening Day 2024.
