Eric Chavez was set to begin the 2022 season as the Yankees assistant hitting coach, but instead, he is reportedly bolting across town.
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, Chavez is accepting a job as the Mets hitting coach, joining Buck Showalter's staff while shunning Aaron Boone for a promotion. Chavez was introduced as part of the Yankees' 2022 staff last month.
Chavez enjoyed a solid major league career that included a Gold Glove award at third base, and spent time with the Yankees near the end of his playing career. He spent time with the Yanks as a scout after retirement before taking a job in the Angels front office, where he worked alongside Billy Eppler, now the Mets general manager who likely played a pick role in plucking Chavez from the Bronx.
Chavez's time as a Yankees coach lasted two weeks.
