We know that as a Mets fan, Evan Roberts could have a certain level of understandable disdain for Roger Clemens – but if he had to choose one out of Rocket or his beloved Jacob deGrom for a must-win, would Evan ACTUALLY choose Clemens?
A call into the show made Tommy admit that he respected Harrison Bader from afar before he came to the Mets, and when Evan said ‘if a guy can help you, you’re gonna like them,’ Tommy said, ‘if Roger Clemens came to the Mets, I would have loved him – you root for the laundry, ultimately.’
Evan can’t believe that Seinfeld-ian take, but Tiki said ‘you’d have loved him’ and Shaun chimed in with ‘and admitted by now he’s better all-time than Jacob deGrom.’
“No, first of all, when did I say Jake was better than Roger Clemens, and second of all, in his prime, at his very best, Jacob deGrom is the best pitcher I ever saw,” Evan said.
Evan then relayed how a chat in his Mets text thread with “Fantasy Phil” about a ‘would you rather have Harvey or deGrom in a Game 7,’ and his response was that he loves Matt Harvey but it’s a no-brainer.
“I have a warm place in my heart for Harvey, but I find the question insulting,” Evan said. “And Adam Eaton joined in and said ‘Evan’s right, that's the dumbest question I've ever seen.’ Phil went back and forth, but I love Matt Harvey, but Jacob deGrom at his very best was Sandy Koufax. I get that he didn’t do it enough, which is of course why Roger Clemens all-time is better than Jacob deGrom – but in a one-game must-win, there’s no one I saw in my lifetime better, but Pedro’s very close, so I’m not saying it’s a blowout. In a big spot, I certainly wouldn’t take Roger.”
Evan was adamant, and Shaun tried to get him to look at Andy Pettitte or El Duque or some other Yankee, but Evan wouldn’t bite – it’s 48 or bust!
