Evan Roberts found out that his beloved Mets had somehow struck again with a huge free agency splash thanks to…Fox News?
"I woke up at 6 a.m. and I had a Fox News alert, and I quickly look at it. It said 'Carlos Correa picks another team,'" Evan said. "I see this headline, and I swear to God, no thought of the Mets. If I had more time to ponder it, maybe I would have gotten there.
"I'm reading the article, and as I get to the word 'Mets,' I scream a cuss word at the top of my lungs…I was stunned. I was stupefied, stunned, and excited."
For Evan, so used to getting late-night bad news when it came to the Mets for decades past, Wednesday morning's revelation was the latest evidence that it is a new day in Queens. Discord has been replaced by dollars, as Steve Cohen is proving that no player is out of his price range, and he will stop at nothing to give Mets fans a championship.
"We had such fantasies when this man bought the team…we just wanted to be a big market team," Evan said. "What he did at 3 a.m. is beyond being a big market team. He went to the lengths of, 'Nothing will stop me.'
"This organization went from firing managers at 3 a.m. to signing elite level free agents at 3 a.m."
