Evan: Craig Counsell is only comforting option for Mets manager

The Mets reportedly held another interview for Craig Counsell on Thursday, and Evan says the former Brewers skipper is the only hire the Mets could make that he would feel good about.

“Today, they’re meeting with the only person they should hire. The guy who needs to be the manager of the Mets, and that is Craig Counsell,” Evan said. “With all due respect to Andy Green, Mark Kotsay, and Carlos Mendoza…today, in this moment, there is really only one real candidate to manage the New York Mets. It is the guy who has done it, and has been successful. It is Craig Counsell or bust.

“If Craig Counsell isn’t manager of the Mets, there is no other slam dunk option. We’re not gonna be confident going into next year that we have a manager who knows that they’re doing.”

Kotsay, Green, and Mendoza are the other reported candidates, but Evan, noting Kotsay’s lack of success with the A’s, Green’s lack of success with the Pirates, and Mendoza’s lack of experience, says it needs to be Counsell, and he only has one concern for why it won’t be.

“Sometimes, not always, but sometimes, what wifey wants, wifey gets,” Evan said. “Michelle Counsell may like New York, but at the end of the day, Michelle may want to stay in Wisconsin. That’s my only fear. I’m not worried about the Cleveland Guardians. I’m not even worried about the Houston Astros. I’m worried about the Counsell family deciding they want to stay local.”
