Evan knew the Mets were a long shot to go on a run and make the playoffs, but trading away David Robertson was still a sobering reality that there was now no chance.

“I wanted, in my own deluded mind, to sell smartly, to sell guys that you could actually replace and still put some kind of run together,” Evan said.
“If you trade Tommy Pham, Mark Canha, or even Jose Quintana, I can rationalize…that the Mets could still conceivably go on a run.

“I can’t even convince myself, with how bad the bullpen is, that minus David Robertson, the Mets are gonna somehow get hot and get back into this race. David Robertson, who I think was the most valuable player the Mets had in the first half, you take him away, and any shot of getting into this race is gone.”

With a pair of teenage prospects coming back in return, Evan says the trade is a “tough sell” for fans who were told by ownership that they envisioned a World Series team in the coming years.

“They took away their most important piece,” Evan said. “They took that piece away, four days away before the deadline, and traded it to a team they are chasing in the Miami Marlins…the Mets took their most valuable piece, in a year in which they’re not fully out of it, and traded it for two lottery tickets that won’t be able to be cashed in for four years. That’s a tough sell for me, as a fan and a customer, and that’s a tough sell for all Mets fans.”
