Evan: 'LOL Mets' moniker officially died with signing of Juan Soto
Evan Roberts signed on for the Evan and Tiki show on Monday afternoon, 16-ish hours after news broke that Juan Soto was signing with the Mets, and the jubilation hadn't worn off in the slightest bit.
"Last night was very, very special," Evan said. "When Steve Cohen bought this team four years ago, this was the dream...it didn't happen for four years. there were big-market moments and moments of celebration...but to sign a 26-year-old megastar in the prime of his career, and not let money stand in the way...this was the dream!
"Pinch yourself, Mets fans, because the reality is setting in. The 26-year-old superstar, the generational talent is coming to the Mets."
That generational talent is exactly the kind of star Evan was hoping would sign with the Mets when Cohen took over the franchise, and for Evan, it washed away the nightmares that he lived through during the previous regime.
"When Steve Cohen bought the team, I wanted this," Evan said. "What the Wilpons didn't do with Alex Rodriguez or Bryce Harper...I am now at peace with not getting A-Rod. Now we have the owner who righted the wrong, who didn't miss out on the opportunity when a 26-year-old megastar became available."
As a major added bonus, Evan says the arrival of Soto means the departure of the narrative that the Mets are a second-tier organization that only bad things happen to.
"LOLMets is dead. LOLMets died last night," Evan said. "I don't ever want to hear it again. It's over.
"The days of mocking or wondering 'Why would anyone wanna go there?' It's dead. Who's laughing now, SNL?"
