Evan: Mets now have 'zero excuses' for not bringing back Pete Alonso

On Thursday, Tiki Barber opened the show declaring that Pete Alonso should prioritize his New York legacy and brand and come back to the Mets, even if it means taking a hometown discount.

Hours later, reports emerged that the first baseman and his camp came to the Mets with a three-year deal with opt outs, and that the offer was exclusive to New York.

So, on Friday, Evan Roberts opened the show shifting his focus to the Mets and their front office, urging them to lock this down ASAP and ensure that their homegrown slugger stays in Queens for at least the next few years.

"You can't lose Pete Alonso now," Evan said. "If he's really willing to take a short-term deal, then there are no excuses. The excuses are gone.

"If you wanted to convince me that it's stupid to give him a five-year deal, and if some team wants to do it, shrug your shoulders and say 'We're not gonna make that business decision.' But on a short-term, opt-out-laden deal, there is zero excuse for Pete Alonso to not be a New York Met."

If Alonso is indeed prioritizing staying in Queens, even if it means losing some money, then Evan says he should be rewarded by being signed to a contract quickly, so Alonso can shift his focus to the season ahead, which will carry more expectations than any Mets season in recent memory.

"It's on you, David Stearns. It's on you, Steve Cohen, to seal the freaking deal. Go get it done," Evan said.

"You have the football on the 2-yard line. What are you gonna do with it? Are you gonna fumble it, or are you gonna run over the dopey linebacker and score a touchdown? Go score a touchdown and make Mets fans happy."
