After reading the latest reporting by Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Evan Roberts is convinced that Pete Alonso has made it known to his agent that he wants to stay in Queens and to go get a deal done.
With Heyman reporting that his feel of the negotiations is that the homegrown slugger “desperately wants to” return to the Mets, Evan believes a resolution will come soon, though he still isn’t sure it will be with New York after months of standstill and public back and forth.
“That, to me, sounds like Scott Boras telling the world, ‘Look! We’re back talking to Steve Cohen!’” Evan said of the report. “Scott Boras is admitting, ‘We lost. But, even though we lost, you New York Mets, what will you really have won if you don’t keep the rarest, most prolific power hitter in your history?
“I thought Scott Boras made it very clear where we are in this saga. Pete Alonso said to Scott, ‘I want to go home, and you better make it happen,’ and now Scott is trying the last tiny pit of power he has to say ‘We’ve given you everything, Mets, now seal the deal.’”
Whenever Alonso signs, it will clearly be for much less than he was hoping for entering free agency, even after having a down year in a contract season. For that reason, Evan also believes that the Alonso/Boras relationship will be over as soon as his free agency is resolved.
“Pete Alonso will soon sign a contract, and soon after...Scott Boras is going to get fired,” Evan said. “He’s going to get fired because he’s failed Pete Alonso.
“He’s gonna say ‘You suck! You didn’t deliver on what you promised me.’”
