Evan mourns death of 'plucky underdog' Mets, reality that another deep run is not guaranteed

The 2024 Mets are no more, concluding their improbable story with a lopsided loss against the Dodgers in game six of the NLCS.

It was a point that nobody expected New York to reach this season, as the team took on a lovable underdog identity that provided countless unforgettable moments over the past four weeks. But even as many fans come away from the season with gratitude that their team made something out of nothing, Evan can't bring himself to that point, at least not yet.

"I'm very sad. I'm very sad that the Mets season is over, and very sad and disappointed that they missed out on this golden opportunity," Evan said. "To me, it is still about what could have been.

"I don't know what the future holds. They might win the World Series next year. I have no idea. But the Mets being the plucky underdog, the OMG, fun-loving, shock-the-world Metsies, that died last night in LA. That's not who they're ever going to be again."

Armed with the richest owner in baseball, a legit MVP candidate in Francisco Lindor, and a budding star in Mark Vientos, Evan believes the Mets' days of being that lovable underdog are over, and now, come 2025, the mentality will change to "They better win now."

And the reality is for Evan, no matter how all in the Mets go from here, there is no guarantee that they will ever get this close to a title again with the current core.

"I think Steve Cohen is gonna be super aggressive," Evan said. "But I've seen enough baseball to know that even if you're the better team, or you're loaded with stars, if you don't play well at the right time...the season ends early. This season was clicking because they had the magic, and they were playing their best baseball at the right time.

"I can't be there right now, because the Mets had a golden opportunity to complete the unlikeliest story this franchise has written since 1969, and at the end of the day, they failed."
