Steve Cohen recently told the New York Post that he is not the type to "blow up" when things are going bad, and stood by Billy Eppler and Buck Showalter amid the Mets' prolonged struggles.
While many Mets fans want to see that George Steinbrenner-esque blowup as New York sinks deeper in the NL East standings, Evan says what he heard from Cohen in his talk with The Post was reassuring.
"What people forget, when we talk about George, we think of all the good of George," Evan said. "The good of George was not firing managers…there was actually stability in the Yankee organization [in the late 90s]."
As Evan pointed out, the Yankees were able to build the foundational of their eventual dynasty while the hot-headed Steinbrenner was serving a suspension, and when he returned, he had to be restrained from trading away promising youngsters like Mariano Rivera. When Steinbrenner was giving in to his frequent blowups, it resulted in the disappointments of the 1980s, which included the firing and rehiring of Billy Martin at a dizzying rate.
So, Evan likes the stability that Cohen is expressing, while still showing the willingness to spend like Steinbrenner did.
"I don't want my owner to be emotional," Evan said. "I want my owner to spend. So far, the spending hasn't worked, I'll be the first to acknowledge it, but he has spent, and I've got no indication that he's gonna stop spending.
"I don't necessarily want, as much as some desperate Mets fans may plead for it, is for him to fire a manager a year and a half into his tenure. That's the bad part of it."
