Last month, Evan pleaded with the Mets to get him "a stick," a veteran bat to help the lineup, and on Monday, he doubled down on the need for Steve Cohen to open up the wallet and go get J.D. Martinez.
"It is becoming so painfully obvious, and it's so easy. Write the check, Steve," Evan said. "Just sign J.D. Martinez. The guy hit 33 home runs last season and drove in over 100 runs.
"It's just money. You're not losing draft picks. You're not even losing playing time for young players, because Baty and Vientos are playing anyway!"
Cohen told reporters that it was getting late to sign a player with Opening Day arriving next week, but Evan doesn't buy that excuse, nor the one where the team wants Baty and Vientos to get plenty of at-bats to see what they have in the youngsters.
"That's BS. It's never awfully late to add a player," Evan said. "You can add a player off waivers right before the start of a season. This is about writing a check. That's all it is.
"The Mets right now are relying on [Vientos and Baty], because both guys need to play. If one guy isn't playing third base, he is DHing."
