Four Mets made it nine New York prospects in FanGraphs' Top 100 list for 2022, and while they had one less than their cross-town counterparts, the Mets did have the highest-ranked of the group.
That would be consensus Top 15 prospect Francisco Alvarez, who was No. 7 on FanGraphs' list and has ranked between No. 7 and No. 13 on every list released so far (with Baseball America having him at 13). The 20-year-old catcher received a future value of 60 – tied for fifth best on a list that had four players with a future value of 65 or the maximum 70 – after a season in which he hit .417 in 15 games at Low-A St. Lucie before moving up to slash .247/.351/.538 with 22 homers and 58 RBI at High-A Brooklyn.
Alvarez is likely to begin 2022 in Brooklyn again, but has said that his goal is to make the majors this year – and it's not out of the realm of possibility, given what FanGraphs called "a cathedral ceiling" thanks to "swing decisions that are mature beyond his years and plus-plus raw power that is already frequently seen in games."
Following Alvarez on the list are the same three Mets prospects that also ranked with him on most or all of the other lists: SS Ronny Mauricio (No. 44), 3B Brett Baty (No. 63), and 3B Mark Vientos (No. 64).
Mauricio, who spent most of last season in Brooklyn and has been a Top 100 prospect on at least one list for four straight years, ranked between 40th and 51st on most lists, but was as low as No. 92 on Baseball America's. He is likely ticketed for Double-A Binghamton, where he finished last season, but might need to move positions at the MLB level given Francisco Lindor being locked in for the next 10 years.
Baty, like Mauricio, hit Double-A last season, and his prospect stock also varied wildly, as the third baseman has ranked mostly in the 30s and 40s, but was as high as 13th on Baseball Prospectus' list and as low as 63rd here.
Vientos, who played a little bit of left field and first base last year once Baty made his way to Binghamton, got his first taste of Triple-A in 2021 and may start 2022 there. Wherever he lands, the 22-year-old will look to improve on a prospect stock that had him ranked 71st by The Athletic, 92nd by FanGraphs, and unranked anywhere else – although he did land in Baseball America's "just missed" Top 15.
Of the five major lists released so far – ESPN, The Athletic, Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, and FanGraphs – Alvarez, Baty, and Mauricio have been on all five, while Vientos made three of five, missing only Baseball America (despite the just missed status) and Baseball Prospectus.
The only other Mets prospect to be ranked by any outlet so far is outfielder Alex Ramirez, who occupied the final spot on The Athletic's Top 100.
