The Mets will be calling in a notable reinforcement for their biggest series of the season, as top prospect Francisco Alvarez will join the team in Atlanta after months of anticipation that the touted catching phenom would make his MLB debut in 2022.
Now, that anticipated debut will come when the stakes couldn't be higher, as New York will battle the Braves in a three-game set that will likely determine the NL East champion.
So, how may Alvarez be deployed this weekend, if at all?
Alvarez, the top-ranked prospect in baseball per MLB.com, will bring some serious pop to the major leagues, as he has 27 home runs this season. As for those hoping Alvarez will mean less playing time for James McCann, don't count on it, as Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports that it is "not likely" Alvarez will be used as a catcher in the majors this season, instead primarily being seen as a DH, mainly against lefties.
So, with Braves ace southpaw Max Fried on the mound for Friday's series opener and Darin Ruf struggling badly at the plate since the trade, there is a chance Alvarez could make his debut as soon as Friday night.
