Francisco Lindor will be captain for Puerto Rico in 2026 World Baseball Classic

The likely next captain of the Mets has been named captain of another team.

Francisco Lindor announced via his Instagram page that he will captain team Puerto Rico in next year’s World Baseball Classic. The Mets shortstop played in the 2023 WBC, when he was captain and went 9-for-20 at the plate.

The announcement means that New York will have two captains in the global event, as Aaron Judge was announced as the captain for Team USA earlier this week.

Lindor has publicly raved about representing Puerto Rico in the WBC, noting that it feels like “game seven every day.” He empathized with Mets fans after Edwin Diaz’s brutal knee injury when celebrating a win in the 2023 WBC, but noted how much the event means to him and the players that participate.
