Puerto Rico’s World Baseball Classic victory quickly turned to despair late Wednesday nighty, as Edwin Diaz went down in pain, clutching his knee, during the team’s celebration on the infield.
It was especially grueling for Diaz’s Mets teammate Francisco Lindor, and his brother, Alexis Diaz.
While the Mets’ star closer was on the ground, clutching his knee in pain, Lindor squatted to the ground and put his hands to his head, clearly distraught at the sight of his teammate in obvious pain. Alexis was in tears as his brother was eventually taken off the field in a wheelchair.
Puerto Rico had just finished off a huge win over a stacked Dominican Republic team to advance to the WBC quarterfinals in front of a hyped crowd in Miami, but the mood quickly turned sour after Diaz’s injury.
