Francisco Lindor struck out with the bases loaded and one out in a key spot in Tuesday's 7-6 loss to the Yankees, knocking his season OPS down to just .708.
Lindor, who went 0-for-3 with a pair of walks, is now below league average with a 95 OPS+, and is left to ponder what is going wrong as he continues to prepare the way he did when he was one of the most valuable shortstops in the league last season.
"I'm doing the same work day in and day out," Lindor said. "My routine hasn't changed since I was in the minor leagues. I take the same amount of swings. If I take 100 swings from one side, I take 100 from the other side…this year, I haven't been able to stay in that ride long enough. I've been fighting uphill.
"I'm doing everything it takes day in and day out to be better and execute…I just haven't done it enough."
Still, despite being at a loss, Lindor vowed that, eventually, he will come alive at the plate and look closer to his 2022 self, though the Mets need that to happen in a hurry after dropping nine of their last 10.
"I will do it. I will be better," Lindor said. "I will be helping the team a lot more. It's just a matter of when. Hopefully, it's sooner rather than later. I go in one day, I drive in three, and go the next two games without helping the team win. That's unacceptable. I'm a professional athlete. I gotta post up every single day and help my team win."
