Boomer told Gio that he feels for Carlos Mendoza after watching Jorge Lopez hurl his glove into the stands before ripping the team (and perhaps himself as a teammate) following another meltdown of a loss for the Mets.
But Gio says it would be wrong to exonerate the first-year manager from any blame as New York sinks further and further towards the bottom of the National League standings, in a year where the owner and president of baseball operations both expressed belief that the team should compete for a playoff spot.
“Isn’t he somewhat responsible for the team being a complete joke?” Gio said. “‘He’s been around baseball forever, he was made for this job, it’s the perfect time.’”
Gio says nobody should be safe from blame for what has been a disastrous season so far, save for the employees within the organization that are tasked with drawing fans to Citi Field as the summer months arrive.
“The only one I feel bad for are those in that organization that have to try and sell tickets,” Gio said. “But this has nothing to do with [Mendoza’s] inexperience or being a rookie. He should have been able to handle it…I don’t feel bad for him. He’s not doing his job properly.”
