Boomer and Gio agree that the Mets seem to be on their way to securing David Stearns as their president of baseball operations, and the current Brewers advisor will likely be in Queens this offseason.
Steve Cohen hasn't been subtle in his desire to bring on Stearns, who Gio says is the ultimate "baseball nerd."
"No disrespect to David Stearns. He is the be-all, end-all baseball nerd," Gio said. "I think Steve Cohen went out and got the top baseball nerd in the world.
"The preeminent baseball nerd is going to be running the Mets."
All teasing aside, Gio is excited for Stearns to come in and help the Mets continue their transition into a new era with a more steady farm system.
"He's very, very bright," Gio said. "I'm thrilled he's gonna be with the Mets. It's gonna happen.
"This guy is from New York…he'd probably love it. Come on."
Assuming Stearns is hired, would general manager Billy Eppler become expendable? Boomer doesn't see it that way, but Gio doesn't see why Eppler would be needed, or if he would be able to maintain a strong voice within the front office.
"Do you need Billy Eppler?" Gio said. "It's like, the buck stops with the president of baseball operations."
