Mets

Gio not a fan of Phil Maton's assessment of performance in nightmare game two

Phil Maton coughed up the Mets' 3-2 lead in the eighth inning on Wednesday night, allowing a solo home run to Jackson Chourio and a two-run blast to Garrett Mitchell as the Brewers tied the series and set up a winner-take-all game three on Thursday.

After the game, Maton told reporters that, after looking back at his outing on video, that he was overall pleased with his pitch selection and his stuff, but it came down to a couple missed spots that doomed him.

It was not at all what Gio wanted to hear from a pitcher who just blew the game and the Mets' chance to move on and get a much-needed two nights of rest before the NLDS.

"That's one of my least favorite sound bites of the year," Gio said. "He just sounds emotionless and weird.

"I'm sure that's a good thing to have a short memory and not being too emotional about it, but when he's not successful, it looks so bad and sounds so bad all around. His body language, his pitches - when he's missing his locations, he looks like he's throwing batting practice - and then you hear that. 'I saw it on my iPad, looked pretty good to me.'"

Maton was one of the midseason pickups by David Stearns that helped fortify the bullpen, but as Gio notes, when Maton doesn't have his command, he gets hit hard, and Wednesday was one of those nights. Gio would just like to see, and hear, some more emotion after losing a game like that.

"When Maton isn't good, it looks terrible," Gio said. "He's a location guy that keeps you off balanced. When he's out there and leaving the ball up like that, he looks like he's throwing batting practice. Yesterday, he was for the Brewers in the eighth, and it just sucked. It sucked to see that."
