Gio expects Mike Hampton to hears boos at Mets Old Timers' Day

Old Timers' Day is back for the Mets come Saturday, and with the event being held for the first time since 1994 coupled with the success of the current squad, the atmosphere at Citi Field should be an overwhelmingly positive one during Saturday's ceremonies.

But could one of the old timers get booed by the home crowd? Gio says there is one candidate who has a good shot.

"I loved Mike Hampton in 2000," Gio said. "He was great for that team, and he wound up leaving and lying his ass off the whole way out the door, signing that big deal with Colorado…says school systems are better out there, and everybody hated him.

"He hasn't been back since, and now he's a part of Old Timers' Day? I bet there's some boos from Mets fans with long memories."

Hampton made 33 starts for the Mets in 2000 and pitched to a respectable 3.14 ERA before signing with the Rockies to pitch in hitter-friendly Coors Field, where he posted a 5.75 ERA over two seasons. Gio is convinced Mets fans don't forget him leaving for Colorado.

"Because you spurned us, that's why," Gio said. "And we were supposed to be good the next year…mark my words, there will be a smattering of boos.

"They should have never asked him [to attend Old Timers' Day]."
