Max Scherzer is no longer a Met, having been traded to the Rangers over the weekend as New York continued its sell-off, waving the white flag on the season.
The departure of Scherzer had a vindicated Gio in high spirits on Monday morning, feeling the Mets finally came around to what he had been saying for months, but no Mets fans wanted to accept.
"I took so much joy in Max Scherzer getting traded and being right about that," Gio said. "Because there were so many Mets fans who wanted them to come back, who thought I was nuts for burying them a couple months ago, thinking I was nuts for wanting to trade Scherzer and [Justin] Verlander.
"For some reason, that bothered me, like they were hanging onto something that just wasn't there…I feel like they were trying to make him a pitcher that he wasn't with the Mets."
Scherzer was spectacular for the bulk of his first season with the Mets in 2022, but came apart down the stretch to lose two critical games, to the Braves with the division title on the line and to the Padres in the Wild Card Series. They are two disastrous outings that Gio won't forgive, or forget.
"You're looking at Max Scherzer's tenure here as one of those joke tenures," Gio said. "He's going to be talked about around here as a joke for the rest of time."
