Gio goes off on Mets failed leaders: 'You come here, and you become an idiot!'
Gio began Thursday's show by expressing his relief that he no longer reacts to the Mets misery with anger, but rather finds the humor in all the ways the team seems to shoot itself in the foot, like a reliever in Jorge Lopez throwing his glove into the stands and later being designated for assignment for calling the Mets "probably the worst team in the whole f----g MLB."
But it didn't take long for Gio to start sounding off on the consistent failures of the franchise to bring in the proper leaders to guide the organization out of the abyss.
"A guy who has spent his entire life in dugouts, jumping into this situation, just like every other person who looks smart before coming to the Mets, and becomes an idiot," Gio said of first-year manager Carlos Mendoza. "There's so many examples of this. Whether it's Brodie Van Wagenen, and the genius that he was, or Mickey Callaway, the pitcher whisperer, or Zack Scott…it's amazing! No matter who you are, you come here, and you become an idiot!
"Luis Rojas, 'great shape, another guy, he's ready for this job, coming through the ranks,' he comes here: idiot."
Gio doesn't see the cycle ending with Mendoza, lamenting the curse that seems to plague whoever is tasked with coming in to reshape of rehabilitate the franchise's image.
"Steve Cohen comes here and is gonna change everything," Gio said. "All he's done is hired idiots, except Buck Showalter, who he fired!"
