Gio is all in on Mets bandwagon: 'This is sustainable'

One month ago, Gio was completely out on the upcoming baseball season, numbed from the bitter lockout talks that soured the excitement surrounding the retooled Mets.

One month and nine wins later, Gio is all aboard the Buck Showalter bandwagon.

"As down as I was in the beginning of the season because of the lockout and all the nonsense, this team has all the elements that make you want to come back for more," Gio said during Wednesday's show after New York swept a doubleheader against the Giants. "They never feel like they're out of it. how many times in years past did 4-1 feel like it might as well have been 40-1?"

The Mets erased a 4-1 deficit in the first game of Tuesday's twin bill, overcoming an initially ineffective Tylor Megill before Max Scherzer dominated in the nightcap, helping New York reach a 9-3 record to begin the year, the best mark in baseball.

The strong start has only helped enhance the hype that began after the hiring of Showalter and the signing of Scherzer in the offseason. The team's hot streak out of the gate has been more than enough to pull Gio back in.

"I know we can potentially play this back in September and laugh at how excited we were because a bunch of stuff went wrong, which can always happen in a baseball season," Gio said. "But the reason I think this is sustainable is you got real leaders. Real, legitimate, proven leaders on this team. Buck Showalter being the manager…and Max Scherzer is another one.

"He's 38 years old, he's making $40 million, and he's out there pitching like it's game seven of the World Series. You love to see that."
