Max Scherzer has expressed frustration with how the pitch clock is implemented in its first season of existence, and even told the New York Post "I can't make excuses" when it comes to the clock potentially impacting his rough start to the season.
Meanwhile, Carlos Carrasco has also had his share of troubles with the pitch clock in the early going. It is something that will be an adjustment for veteran pitchers, which the Mets have plenty of, but Gio believes the team's early struggles is a telling sign of their lack of focus in the spring.
"They came up here and it felt like they were unprepared," Gio said bluntly.
"I know this is taking it too far because I'm not there every day in spring training, but what did we hear a lot of from Buck [Showalter] every day in spring training? It was all spinning yarn, and stories here, jokes there, whatever. Then they come up, they look like crap, they don't know the pitch clock, and everybody's hurt. This is my perception of where they are right now when they came north."
The Mets offense, save for Wednesday's series finale against the Brewers, had been dormant to start the season, while Scherzer has gotten knocked around for eight runs over 11.1 innings. Gio says the team has to turn things around starting with Friday's home opener.
"It's gotta start today," Gio said. "They gotta sweep this series. That's how I feel. You lose this series, that's a joke."
