Gio: Mets fans will quickly 'hate' David Stearns if season goes 'haywire'
The Mets get started on the 2024 season on Friday afternoon, and while expectations will be lower than last season, Gio says the team and their new president will be under heavy fire if this year leads to disaster like last season did.
"If this season goes haywire, people are gonna hate David Stearns. They're gonna hate him," Gio said. "They're gonna say 'This guy came in here, is running it like a small market team.'"
Boomer believes the Mets can be competitive in 2024, and Stearns can avoid criticism by having his team compete for a playoff spot despite not making the big winter additions that Billy Eppler and company did last offseason.
"They have an up-and-coming catcher. They have a great shortstop…a second baseman who won a batting title," Boomer said. "A center fielder who can cover both right and left…there's no reason this team shouldn't be .500 or better. And if they are .500 or better at the trade deadline, maybe they do add a little bit."
