Gio: Mets might as well have kept Francisco Alvarez in minors given current usage

Francisco Alvarez rode the bench on Monday night with Tomas Nido starting behind the plate to catch Max Scherzer, as the Mets top prospect hasn't seen consistent playing time in his brief time since being called up from Triple-A.

At this point, Gio and Jerry don't understand how this current playing time is helping Alvarez develop, and he should either be played more often or sent back down.

"I know they didn't want to be in this situation with Francisco Alvarez, who they didn't want up at this point…but are you gonna work him in for real or not?" Gio said. "If he's not catching David Peterson tonight, that wouldn't make sense…to me, the circumstances dictated that this guy is here. You need him in the lineup. Dipping him in and out in a freezing cold April in Major League Baseball, is not going to help him.

"You might as well have just kept him down if you're gonna treat him like this."

With Omar Narvaez likely out for two months, Alvarez is seemingly here to stay, though he isn't playing much at catcher or DH in the early going. Nido leaves a lot to be desired offensively, but is clearly superior on the defensive side to Alvarez, who the Mets have said they want to see work on his defense. But Gio and Jerry don't see that happening with such little playing time in the majors, and Jerry wants to at least see Alvarez's bat in the lineup more often.

"It's April. I would play him," Jerry said. "I'm being a bat off the bench in the seventh or eighth inning after sitting for four hours, I don't love that either."
