Gio: Mets plan is to 'chill out and rebuild,' while 'punting' on 2024

Gio has long expected that the Mets would have a very quiet offseason, and he could see it being less splashy than the winters of acquiring Braden Looper and Mike Cameron, or Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha.

After making a trade for Adrian Houser and Tyrone Taylor on Wednesday, Gio is even more confident that Mets fans won't be getting much for Christmas this year.

"I think with the teams in the division that are clearly better than them, they are not looking to win the division this year, and they know it," Gio said. "This is 'Let's get the money off the books, let's chill out and rebuild the farm system, and let's not tell the fans this, but we're punting on 2024 for the betterment of the franchise in the future.'"

Even if the Mets pull it off and land Yoshinobu Yamamoto, it won't change Gio's mind all that much.

"I still think that would be the only thing they do, and the bigger offseasons would be coming up," Gio said. "One pitcher would not make them better than the Braves and the Phillies."
