The Mets could face a roster crunch soon with Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido making their way back from the IL, and it could lead the team to a difficult decision at catcher.
With Francisco Alvarez being the only catcher remaining with minor league options, does the top prospect get sent back down after finally starting to show his potential at the plate?
Gio says it better not happen.
"You cannot send down Francisco Alvarez," Gio said. "It's not for Pete Alonso coming back. It's not for Lindor coming back. It's for Narvaez and Nido coming back, and that is the bigger issue. I just, I hope it doesn't happen.
"These are the things I'm telling you that we as Met fans when the Wilpons weren't around anymore, thought wouldn't happen."
Jerry agrees that demoting Alvarez would seem like a step back for the Mets, and would send a bad message to the team and the fans.
"What message does it send?" Jerry said. "We had this conversation in March. If [Anthony] Volpe doesn't get the job based on what he's done, then what's been the point of this? The same thing with Alvarez. You brought him up, and maybe they didn't expect him to do anything, but the last week's been great. Now you want to turn it off?
"You're on a winning streak, you're winning series again and now you want to rip this kid away from the fanbase that they're starting to fall in love with?"
