Gio believes Mets run in 2024 could lead to Steve Cohen having his limits with Juan Soto
The Juan Soto sweepstakes will dominate the New York baseball landscape for likely months as the offseason is officially underway, and Boomer believes both the Yankees and Mets should go to Scott Boras with the desire to get a deal done soon.
"I'd go to Juan Soto and say 'Here's what we're willing to give you right now,'" Boomer said. "If he says no, then I turn my attention elsewhere to shoring up my team."
The Yankees and Mets will likely be among the highest offers for Soto, with many believing that the Mets and Steve Cohen will come with the top bid after reaching the NLCS in surprising fashion. But Gio isn't so sure that Cohen and his embarrassment of riches means that he'll be ready to write a blank check to bring Soto to Queens, especially coming off a year in which they came just two wins short of a pennant without Soto.
"I do think there's a limit with Steve Cohen," Gio said. "As competitive as he is, I also think he looks at this team this past year and says 'Maybe I don't need to pay a guy $700 million to get to where I need to go.'"
Could David Stearns and his small-market experience also play a role in Cohen potentially capping his spending for a superstar like Soto? Will the Yankees and Hal Steinbrenner's public admission to wanting to bring payroll down have a hard ceiling as well? If those potential narratives turn out to be true, Gio says both New York teams will wind up being outbid by a team out west that is starving to sign a star after missing multiple times in recent years.
"I know the Mets and Yankees are gonna make big offers," Gio said. "I just think, if one team is gonna do the really stupid thing because they have to get the player, it would be the Giants."
