The Mets have won five straight, but Gio says it’s not because of the recent call-up of Mark Vientos, or the more consistent playing time for Francisco Alvarez and Brett Baty.
No, the Mets are back on track because the veterans who were expected to lead the team in 2023 are finally delivering.
“This is how they turn it around,” Gio said. “The guys they already had on the roster. The veterans. We talk a ton about the kids…but if the Mets are gonna turn this season into something Steve Cohen is proud of, it’s gotta start with the guys we saw perform over the last couple days.”
Francisco Lindor, after logging five hits in a three-game sweep of his former team, has been batting .314 over his last eight games, while Marte finally went deep on Sunday after a dreadful start to the season of his own. Sunday also saw the team’s two hopeful aces in Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander combining to pitch 14 innings while allowing just one run.
For Gio, this is how the Mets win, with these key veterans leading the way:
“Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, Jeff McNeil, Max Scherzer, and Justin Verlander,” Gio said.
