Gio: Not a good look that Buck Showalter wasn't adamantly sticking up for Max Scherzer

Max Scherzer blew a top when pleading his case with the umpiring crew on Wednesday before he was ejected due to a thorough sticky substance check, but Gio wanted to know why Buck Showalter seemed to calm and measured during the whole ordeal, and not sticking up for his ace.

"I needed more from Buck yesterday," Gio said. "Buck is sitting there watching this happen, he's not fired up at all, he's totally calm, and he basically accepts the result and goes back to the dugout.

"For Max Scherzer to be involved, who is supposed to be a leader and the culture changer…for him to get, in max's perception, completely hosed by the umpires, and for the manager to just sit there and take it all in without having his back is amazing. Where is Buck throwing the hat down and kicking the dirt on somebody else?"

The only explanation for Gio, and even Boomer? Because Showalter knew it was a hopeless argument, because he knew what Scherzer was using in his glove.

"I'm thinking to myself, maybe he knows Max was using something, and that's why he wasn't fighting back?" Gio said. "If he really thought the umpires were unfair to one of his most important players…then I would have thought that Buck would have gotten thrown out too."
