Gio: Pete Alonso's Mets uncertainty strikingly similar to Saquon Barkley's Giants ending

Pete Alonso talked about his Mets future before Monday’s All-Star Game, expressing his desire to not be traded and stay in New York long term.

Gio says the way the Alonso situation is unfolding is reminiscent of how Saquon Barkley’s time with the Giants came to an end, which has been thrust back into the spotlight with Offseason Hard Knocks.

“This is very much like what we’re watching unfold on Hard Knocks Offseason with the Saquon Barkley and the Giants. Very similar,” Gio said.

“You have someone with depreciating value because of his age and the length of a contract that he’s gonna be looking for with his agent.
Same as Saquon Barkley. Someone who has said publicly that they want to be here and be with this team for the rest of his career. And a general manager in Joe Schoen and a president of baseball operations that offered each of these guys a contract that they turned down, and here we go.”

Barkley expressed a desire to be a Giant for life, but ultimately, he was offered more to sign with the rival Eagles, and will wear a uniform other than Giant blue for the first time in his career come September. Time will tell if Alonso follows a similar path and signs with a new team this winter.

“So, how is this one gonna end?” Gio said. “It’s very, very similar to the Saquon situation.”
