Gio says Mets are a third place team in NL East right now

Even before Edwin Diaz's season-ending injury, Gio wasn't high on his Mets coming into the 2023 season.

Now that the team's All-Star closer is out for the year, Gio is feeling even worse. Third-place levels of worse.

"You know, this comes as a shock, but I have a bad feeling about the Mets going into the season," Gio said. "Terrible feeling about it. I don't think they're gonna be better than the Phillies or the Braves. I think they're a third place team.

"I mean, if you think about it, they're not really any better…lost Jacob deGrom so, yeah. In the two big series, he was not great, but he was the only one who pitched well in the playoffs out of those three guys."

The Mets will have heavy competition in the NL East, and Gio doesn't think New York did enough to bring in improvements to the roster, rather were left retaining pieces from last year's team that couldn't hold off the Braves for the division title.

"Where did they really improve? Honestly?" Gio said. "Where, I mean, you, now that they've lost Edwin Diaz, where have they improved?"
