Gio says Mets really dodged a bullet by not signing Javy Baez: 'This guy stinks'

Javier Baez was pulled from Thursday’s game by Tigers manager A.J. Hinch following a pair of baserunning blunders, which was the latest piece of evidence for Jerry and Gio that the Mets dodged a bullet by not re-signing him.

Not only was Baez making inexplicable mistakes on the basepaths, but he is off to a terrible start at the plate in 2023, logging just five hits in 41 at-bats with no home runs, one season after posting a .671 OPS in his first season with Detroit following the signing of a six-year, $140 million deal.

“We talk a lot about the misses with the Mets, but this was a huge one, to not re-sign Javy Baez, because this guy stinks,” Gio said. “He doesn’t know what the hell is going on, and he’s making $100 million.”

Baez, acquired by the Mets before the trade deadline in 2021, excelled for New York after the trade, playing alongside close friend Francisco Lindor. But the Mets didn’t bring him back, and so far, that’s turning out to be a home run of a decision.

“A lot of money for a guy I would think is not as good as what his contract said,” Jerry said. “But he got it, so good for him.

“He’s an overpaid star. These things happen.”
