As Mets fans still wait for Steve Cohen to make a big offseason move following last year's disappointment, Gio is managing his expectations, still believing that the new president of baseball operations will orchestrate a more long-term rebuild.
"This is gonna be like a renovation. It's gonna take a long time," Gio said. "David Stearns is gonna come in, and he's not gonna just throw money at the problem. He's gonna go in there, replace the foundation, and knock the whole thing down.
"I could picture David Stearns going to Steve Cohen and to people in marketing saying 'This offseason, especially if we don't get Yamamoto, you're not selling season tickets. We're gonna have to go through this to get this organization on the right track. It just can't be short term, get the shiny objects and then suck again.'"
Boomer believes the rebuild will be extensive, and will also extend beyond the major league roster.
"They'll expand the scouting operations, the analytic operations, all that," Boomer said. "On top of all of this, not only are they trying to put a winning team out there, they're trying to build Metropolitan Park, get a casino license. They're trying to do all these things at once over there. It's an amazing endeavor that they're trying to do over there."
