Gio: Mets bullpen is why team won't make playoffs, would 'love' to trade Edwin Diaz if possible
The Mets bullpen struggled again on Monday afternoon, as Eric Orze allowed three earned runs without recording an out in his big-league debut, and Adrian Houser allowed three runs of his own in 2.1 innings of work in an eventual 8-2 loss.
Hyped prospect Christian Scott allowed just one hit and two runs in 5.2 innings for the Mets, but was pulled due to pitch count concerns despite sitting at just 77 on the day.
For Gio, the bullpen implosion was the latest piece of evidence for why this team won't be able to hang for the rest of the season and secure a Wild Card spot.
"They're just not going anywhere," Gio said. "I'm glad they have a summer and a season now that they're .500, but they're not going to the playoffs. They're just not going anywhere. So they're gonna try to protect their young pitcher.
"The bullpen is so bad, and that includes Edwin Diaz this year. It is so bad, they will never be able to maintain enough winning for the rest of the year to get them into the playoffs."
Diaz, coming off missing an entire season due to knee surgery, is pitching to a 4.26 ERA on the season, and Gio says he has been part of the problem, and if a team is willing to take on his record contract in a trade, the Mets should pull the trigger.
"I wonder if he is someone, if the Mets do have a bad rest of July, if he is someone who is desirable to another team with the way he is pitching coming off a major injury, making the money he's making," Gio said. "I would love to get rid of him."
