The Mets failed to win another series on Monday, losing to the Nationals in blowout fashion to fall to two games below .500.
Looking ahead, New York has work to do in order to get back in the NL East race, but looking even further, BT wonders if the Mets are doing damage to a potential coveted free agent this coming winter.
“If they don’t start bringing results that are the opposite of what they got so far, how are the Mets remotely appealing to Shohei Ohtani?” BT said. “The money is going to be the same everywhere, so it’s not about the money.”
The Mets, especially with Steve Cohen at the helm, are expected to make a strong push for the two-way superstar, who likely will want to test free agency and find a franchise better suited to consistently compete, as the Angels haven’t been able to capitalize on his or Mike Trout’s prime. BT wonders if the Mets would check that box in Ohtani’s eyes if the team continues to struggle.
“It’s not basketball. Players don’t view other situations as being the savior in baseball,” BT said. “He can be a difference maker for the Dodgers and win easier, for the same money, and stay on the west coast.
“The Dodgers will be in the middle of this.”
