The Mets pulled off their biggest win of the season on Wednesday in improbable fashion, becoming the first team in 50 years to erase a deficit of two runs or more three times with three home runs in the seventh inning or later.
New York desperately needed that win, coming into the night three games below .500, with a loss ensuring that it would be over a month since the team won a series.
Instead, it was all smiles after Pete Alonso's three-run walk-off blast in the 10th inning, taking down a Rays team with the best record in baseball.
"It can hopefully give them some confidence and energy," Sal Licata said. "Hopefully we see more of a team that resembles the one we saw a week ago.
"You saw it in the relief. There was joy in the dugout…but they needed this one badly."
The win had everything, including huge home runs from the team's coveted youngsters, as Francisco Alvarez tied the game with a three-run home run, and Mark Vientos, in his first game since being called up earlier in the day, blasted a two-run shot of his own.
For Sal, if that kind of win doesn't get the team going, nothing will.
"If this doesn't jumpstart the Mets, nothing will," Sal said. "Time for a new battery, time for a new car, if you can't jumpstart this one off of a win like that."
