We do know that J.D. Davis, who the Mets placed on the IL last Sunday, will have surgery to repair a ligament injury between his left middle and ring fingers.

"Yeah I'm planning surgery on Tuesday, flying out tomorrow on Monday to over to Dayton, and Dr. Graham is gonna be doing the surgery and we'll go from there," Davis told the media on the field at Truist Park on Sunday, prior to the Mets’ season finale against Atlanta.

Davis was bothered by that left hand literally all year – he was on the IL from April 10-17 with a left hand contusion, then again from May 3-July 16 with a left hand sprain before the finger acted up and forced him inactive again last week – and played in just 73 games around the injuries.

"I've always said that it kind of bothered me, and here and there would flare up," Davis said. "It is what it is, I tried to gut it out. The team needed me, and I just tried to play games under the circumstance and sometimes I guess it doesn't come through."

What we don’t know, however, is what the Mets will do with Davis, who is about to enter his second of four arbitration years, this off-season. Davis would love to be back, but after slashing .285/.384/.436 with five homers and 23 RBI in his 78 games and making $2.1 million in this injury-plagued season, he may be a square peg in a round hole – especially if the Mets do make a serious push for Javy Baez.

Davis thinks it’s 50/50, but in a moment of candor, said it feels like today marks the end of his time in Queens.

"It's kind of 50/50, kind of a flip of the coin," Davis said. "I know there's going to be plenty of changes up and down from front office down to here. But again, I've always told you it's out of my control or anything like that. But from my gut feeling, I could be out of here, that's where it's kind of leaning towards.”

Davis has hit .288 with 33 homers and 99 RBI over 269 games with the Mets in three seasons, including a 2019 where he posted a .307-22-xx line in 140 games. However, with no DH in the NL as of yet, Dom Smith seemingly locked into left field, and the possibility of Jeff McNeil moving to third or even top prospect Brett Baty taking over the hot corner, Davis’ fit is tenuous at best.

He gets it if he’s gone, but would love to be back.

"There is a possibility that I could come back. I love New York, love the fans, love the city. So I don't know, it's a flip of the coin."
