As of late Tuesday afternoon, Jacob deGrom is scheduled to make his next start for the Mets on Wednesday against the Cubs.
"As of now, yes," manager Luis Rojas told reporters on Tuesday. "Still a day to day approach, but as of now he's giving the thumbs up and has done everything he needs to do to be ready."
The Mets ace left his last start early due to right flexor tendonitis, but told reporters after the game that it didn't feel like a serious injury and planned to make his next start. Given the fact that he echoed something similar the last time he left a start early (due to lat tightness) and wound up going on the IL, his confidence wasn't a guarantee, but it seems like his preparation for his next start has gone well, and he will be on the mound on Wednesday.
Still, Rojas and the Mets will be careful with deGrom, as this is now the second injury scare so far this season. And given how valuable he has been, now seen as the betting favorite to win the MVP, the Mets will watch him closely in his next outing.
"We talk about how easy he throws the ball, but it's still an effort," Rojas said. "He brings a lot of torque and there's a lot of energy used throughout the outing. Going six, seven, eight innings, he even went nine earelier in the season. We figured that some of those things can come out of that. Some of the tightness, anything that's come his way already is because of the force that he creates."
DeGrom currently holds a 0.56 ERA in 64 innings, having allowed just four earned runs all year while driving in five at the plate. Mets fans held their breath when he was taken out of the game last week, but it appears it won't result in any missed time.
"The good thing right now is nothing major happened, even though he exited his last outing," Rojas said. "As of now, we expect him to start."
