If Wednesday was Jacob deGrom's final rehab start, he'll head back to Queens with a mixed bag in his last tune-up.
The righty started Wednesday afternoon's matinee in Syracuse for the Triple-A Mets and threw 67 pitches (41 strikes) over four innings, allowing four runs on two hits and three walks while striking out six.
DeGrom walked the leadoff batter in the first, then struck out two of the next three – including a rehabbing Salvador Perez – but ran into trouble in the second, as he allowed a leadoff homer followed by two walks.
DeGrom then got the next two outs on a pair of strikeouts, but he surrendered a three-run homer before fanning Perez once again to end the inning.
The third and fourth were 1-2-3 innings, but the damage was done in that second.
With deGrom's rehab clock set to expire on Aug. 2, his next step is likely bakc to Queens, which manager Buck Showalter confirmed in his pregame media session prior to Wednesday's Subway Series game.
"The plan right now, if everything progresses correctly, is for him to pitch for us next time," Showalter said. "But, that could always change based on what we hear tomorrow or the next day. We'll see where we slot that out if that is the case."
either a return to the Majors or a setback and restart of the clock, with the Mets and their fans hoping for the former. He would be on turn to pitch August 1 – the same schedule as Max Scherzer, who pitches Wednesday night in Game 2 of the Subway Series – and with a doubleheader against Atlanta on August 6, the Mets have some options.
Thanks to off days Monday and Thursday this week, the Mets can line up Chris Bassitt, David Peterson, and Carlos Carrasco in any order they want for this weekend's series with Miami, and even use Taijuan Walker on regular rest Sunday.
