Jacob deGrom's MRI revealed 'nothing,' ace will continue throwing

Jacob deGrom's MRI to look into his right side tightness that caused him to leave Sunday's start against the Diamondbacks came back squeaky clean, much to the relief of the streaking Mets.

"It's pleasant to hear that it's clean," manager Luis Rojas said. "There's nothing going on. Nothing in there, no inflammation, no sprain, nothing. The plan is to treat it because there's tightness, and to make sure that when he's throwing, there's nothing getting out of whack because of the tightness."

deGrom was scratched from his previous start due to tightness in his right side, but felt much better by Sunday and tossed five innings of one-hit, one-run ball at Citi Field before having to be pulled after taking warmup tosses prior to the top of the sixth inning. He was put on the 10-day IL out of precaution, but New York now can take relief in the fact that its ace's lat tightness isn't a result of any serious injury.

deGrom will continue throwing as he prepares for his return, hoping to resume what was a historic start to his season.

"He's playing catch every day," Rojas said. "It's not like he's going to take days off from playing catch every day…that's going to be the progression for the next few days and see how he feels."

deGrom has allowed just three earned runs in 40 innings so far this season, racking up 65 strikeouts along the way. Sean-Reid Foley was called up in reponse to deGrom landing on the IL, but the expectation is for deGrom to return soon.

But of course, the team will be careful with its most valuable player.

"We'll pay attention to the mechanics and make sure everything is in line the way he's always done it, and that it's not affecting any other area," Rojas said.
