The Mets have won seven of 10 and are now seeing some good news off the field as well.
In a season dominated by injury headlines and health setbacks, manager Luis Rojas told reporters on Tuesday that Jeff McNeil is ahead of schedule on recovering from his hamstring pull, and will start a rehab assignment this weekend.
"McNeil is gonna start this weekend," Rojas said. "Whether it's Friday, Saturday or Sunday, one of the three days, but he'll start his rehab assignment this weekend."
McNeil hasn't played since May 16, and had been heating up at the plate before hitting the IL. In his last 11 games, a span of 45 plate appearances, McNeil was batting .325 with a home run and an .850 OPS. His return is a welcomed sight for New York, which has watched other key contributors like Brandon Nimmo, Carlos Carrasco and Noah Syndergaard suffer setbacks in their roads back from injury.
"That's why we say week-to-week," Rojas said. "He responded really well to treatment and progressed well. We're pretty optimistic with him rehabbing and meeting us down the road."
On the season as a whole, McNeil is slashing .242/.336/.374 with three home runs. He was initially expected back at the end of the month, but now it looks like it will be sooner, though Rojas didn't give an estimate.
"We'll start this weekend and see how long it takes before he joins us," Rojas said.
