Jeremy Hefner addresses struggles of Mets pitching staff

As the Mets pitching staff continues to struggle despite New York committing nearly $130 million to its rotation, pitching coach Jeremy Hefner spoke to reporters after Wednesday's loss.

"Obviously we're not doing everything we need to be doing to be successful, whether it be sequencing, or throwing the ball where we want to throw it," Hefner said. "Coming off Max and JV, putting together a pretty good start. JV gave up four runs and got us deep in the ballgame, and obviously Max was really good, and Cookie and Megill coming off rough ones."

Tylor Megill was knocked around on Wednesday, while Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer have been up and down despite earning $43 million each this year. Despite committing a load of money to the rotation this past winter, the Mets have the fifth worst rotation ERA in the league, and are in the bottom 10 in home runs allowed, WHIP, and opponent batting average.

For Hefner, he says he and his pitchers aren't controlling what they need to in order to be successful.

"It's always a game of adjustments and what the opposition is trying to do to you," Hefner said. "But also, what can we control? I don't think we're necessarily doing the things that we can control to the best of our ability."
